About the event

Session description

Increasing use of consumer technologies to collect and communicate patient generated health data (PGHD) offers the opportunity to improve surgical site infection (SSI) surveillance and care coordination. Further, it may provide new insight into how SSI is understood and defined. Despite this, evidence on how to incorporate PGHD into clinical care and quality improvement work is limited. Surgical quality officers face new opportunities - and challenges - when applying PGHD and mobile health (mHealth) innovations to the process of surgical site infection detection and monitoring. During this session, we will present the current state of the art of post-operative post-discharge SSI surveillance, ascertained through our CDC-sponsored Health Technology Assessment (ASSIST). We will explore how the definition of SSI might expand to include new PGHD standards, including wound photography features and symptom reports. Additionally, we will address the barriers to mHealth integration into an existing HAI surveillance program and implications for merging real-time decision support and surveillance.

Session topics and speakers

  • Current use of patient generated health data and mHealth technology to track post-surgical wounds
  • Redefining SSI: Developing standards for patient-initiated wound photography and symptom documentation
  • How do I implement an mHealth-based program for post-discharge SSI care coordination and surveillance?

Final Panel TBA, but may include:

Heather Evans

Traci Hedrick

Liza Wick

Joe Sharma

Sheri Chernersky-Tejador
